FIGURE DE MAT DE CASE

Les populations Sawos et Iatmul disposent aux deux sommets de leur case de cérémonie une sculpture faîtière qui racontent une légende de création de clan. Ces sculptures reposent sur de grands mats dont la base est à l'effigie d'un ancêtre féminin (cf photo).

Cette figure avait déjà perdu ses bras et jambes lorsque je l'ai trouvée, puis j'ai fait couper le mat qui était bien trop long pour être transporté. Elle est fixée sur une plaque ronde en métal.

Les détails de cette pièce, ses formes, sa complexité indique qu'elle a été sculptée par un maître sculpteur il y a 30/40 ans.

Sawos and Iatmul people display on both sides of the roof of their spirit house a finialroof carving which tell a story about their tribe. This finialroof stands on a long mast which starts as a female ancestor, the pictures below show how it works.

The figure had already lost its arms and legs when i found it, and  i had to cut the part above the figure which was too long to be transported. This remaining part is in good condition and put on a round iron plate

If you look at the details on the pictures, you can see that this figure has been carved by a very talented carver, probably 30/40 years ago.

One picture shows the mast and its twin when i collected them, the mast on the house is a different one.
