Yena cult figure

Petite figure de culte "yena" collectée dans le village de Nagri en Papouasie Nouvelle Guinée (Ethnie Nokuma). La figure yena s'associe à la première cérémonie organisée pour fêter la récolte de l'igname (cycle de trois cérémonies en tout), tubercule sacré et vénéré dans toute la Mélanésie. Cette sculpture symbolise la période de plantation et évoque le tubercule ainsi que le bâton à fouir servant à sa transplantation. Ces traditions sont encore fortes dans la région des monts Washkuk. Pièce en bois et pigments naturels vendue montée sur socle.
 

Small Yena cult figure collected in the village of Nagri in Papua New Guinea (Nokuma ethnic group). The yena figure is associated with the first ceremony organized to celebrate the harvest of the yam (cycle of three ceremonies in all), sacred and revered tuber throughout Melanesia. This sculpture symbolizes the planting period and evokes the tuber as well as the stick to be used for its transplantation. These traditions are still strong in the region of the Washkuk hills area. Piece in wood and natural pigments sold on base.
