Voici une pièce de musée. La qualité de sa réalisation, son ancienneté, son bon état de conservation et notammment la présence de ce pigment rouge font de cet objet une exception. Il s'agit d'un des objets les plus étonnants que l'on puisse trouver dans une case de cérémonie papou. Il s'agit d'un personnage féminin qui incarne la femme créatrice et la fertilité. Ce personnage se prolonge en un poteau de près de 7m de long qui a pour fonction de soutenir la poutre faîtière et l'une des deux sculptures faîtières. Ici, la partie non sculptée de ce mât a été coupée. La photo in situ en bas de page permet de visualiser sa position dans la case. Cette pièce faisait partie d'une case qui a été mise à terre lorsqu'elle a été jugée trop ancienne. On peut donc supposer une ancienneté d'une quarantaine d'années (durée de vie d'une case). This a museum piece. The way it has been carved, its age, its good shape, its red color make of it an exception. This is one of the most amazing thing you can find in a papuan spirit house. This piece shows a woman who symbolises the first mother of the clan and fertility. Above his head, a pole which is carved on a few meters and that evokes some totemic animals, here a snake. . Here, the pole has been cut right after the carved part. The total lenght of this piece was about 7 meters long. You can see on a picture below how this huge carving is set in the spirit house. This pole support the ridgepole of the men's house and a finialroof carving, usually an ancestor with a bird. This a real peace which has been used and that is probably 40 years old. I could get it when they put down an old spirit house. Wood, pigments.
