BILUM BAG

Sac traditionnel papou appelé "bilum" fabriqué à partir d'une seule cordelette végétale tressée, issue de l'écorce d'un arbre. Ce bilum a la particularité d'être entièrement orné de plumes. Il a donc été probablement fabriqué pour être exhibé lors d'une cérémonie traditionnelle. Chaque papou, femme ou homme, possède son bilum pour transporter de la nourriture, du tabac, des noix de betel, des amulettes... Ce spécimen exceptionnel avait probablement une fonction moins quotidienne.

Traditional Papuan bag called "bilum" made from a single braided vegetable cord, from the bark of a tree. This bilum has the particularity of being entirely decorated with feathers. It was therefore probably made to be exhibited in a traditional ceremony. Each papuan, woman or man, has his bilum to carry food, tobacco, betel nuts, amulets... This exceptional specimen probably had a less everyday function.
